The Longest Shortest Time

Accidental Podcaster

I’ve been a radio producer for about 13 years now. When podcasting came along I thought it was a cool medium, though I never imagined I’d become a podcaster. But as you know, I did. Because I just sort of felt like I had to.

Recently the kind folks at Transom, a showcase and workshop for new public radio, asked me to write a podcasting-related essay for their Sidebar column. It was a funny thing to think about because I jumped in to podcasting so accidentally. So that’s what I wrote about. That and why podcasting was the only logical medium for talking about early motherhood in the way I wanted to do it. And how I am fueled by my audience’s (YOUR) passion for my show. And why radio programs are reluctant to air it. And my ideas about how to change that. In the piece I ask for additional ideas on how to get niche podcasts on the radio. I’d love to hear from some of you, even if it’s just to say that you’d support hearing LST on your local air.

Also, if any of you are aspiring radio producers or know of one, Transom is *the* resource for how to craft radio—technically, editorially, and artistically. Check it out.
