A Book to (Really) Make Any New Mom Laugh

parenting-is-easy-cover Remember Sara Given from Episode #43: It’s Like She Knows Us? Sara was the member of our Facebook group for mamas, who took a funny thread from the group and unwittingly spun it into a viral Tumblr blog overnight. The concept of It’s Like They Know Us is simple: 1) find ridiculous parenting stock photos and 2) add snarky captions.

In my early days of motherhood, I was in desperate need of some humor. But the parenting humor genre tends to be pretty dumb and corny, and I was not in the mood to groan. It would’ve been nice to have something sharp and witty, and a little dark. Y’know, the way I like my humor in the rest of my life. Sara’s blog totally fits that bill, and I’m pleased to say that you can now find her hilarious skewering of picture-perfect parenthood in her beautiful book Parenting Is Easy: You’re Probably Just Doing It Wrong. If this book had been around five years ago, it would’ve had a permanent fixture on my bedside (air-mattress-side?) table, along with my industrial strength breast pump, painkillers, and graham crackers (to take with the meds in the middle of the night, of course!). And it would’ve followed me to the bathroom for sitz bath reading, for sure.

Sara’s book is the perfect gift for any new mom. And I’m so proud to say that it was born out of the Longest Shortest Time community, and our supportive, weird, funny spirit.

  1. I was gifted a book that you would probably appreciate. It’s called “This is Ridiculous This is Amazing: Parenthood in 71 Lists” By Jason Good. Jason is a comedian, and this was the PERFECT gift for me. I received it 3 days after our daughter was born (our first child), which also happened to be the day she was readmitted to the hospital for jaundice and lethargy. Three days post-partum also happened to be the PEAK PEAK PEAK of my hormones after birth, so her readmission through me into an emotional tailspin (or at least it felt that way at the time). I hadn’t even opened the gift yet, but put it in my overnight bag, hoping to distract myself at some point. I started reading through these lists and laughed out loud. I had been a parent of a grand total of 96 hours, and already I enjoyed each list. Parents of kids who are a bit older, like grade-school age, will really appreciate this book! And the short list format is perfect for mom who are up nursing in the middle of the night… short enough to be interrupted to help the babe reattach to the boob, and funny enough to give you some perspective on your feeding babe and this ridiculous/amazing thing called parenthood. I highly recommend this book! (It’ll be my new “congrats on your baby!” gift to all of my friends… along with this Sara Given book)

Also, I just discovered this podcast and I AM IN LOVE. I feel like a little old southern lady in church yelling “Preach it!” to the pastor. Thank you so much for this.
