The Longest Shortest Time

How LST Was Born

We tell a lot of birth stories here at LST. I’ve talked a bit about how I got the idea to produce this podcast but I’ve never written here about how I started it, or how episodes get made. But now you can find out at How Sound.

How Sound is a podcast produced by radio producer and instructor extraordinaire Rob Rosenthal. (If you want to study with Rob, he is now teaching at the Transom Story Workshop.) In each How Sound episode Rob interviews a producer about their work and gets them to tell the backstory to how that work was made. This week’s episode is about LST. And about my very first radio story, which actually never made it on the radio, and was produced with a microcassette answering machine and a shiny red boombox. It’s about my friend Jamie, who is obsessed with the end of the world in a secular way—like how he’d run every day not for the exercise but to train himself to be able to outrun wild dogs when the world ends. This is the story that got me in the door with This American Life and launched my radio career. And prepared me to produce a podcast like LST. Listen to How Sound and let Rob tell you how.
