The Longest Shortest Time

March Sponsors

This month we’re adding two sponsors to the sidebar, and I’m pleased to say that they are both moms running their own projects. Let me introduce you to Rion and Julia, and the things they do.

Designer Rion Nakaya started her “not-made-for-kids-videos-that-you-can-watch-with-your-kids” site The Kid Should See This when her oldest child was three years old. She’d spent a lot of time searching online for age-appropriate videos that she’d enjoy watching, too. She found that both she and her kid were way more captivated by educational videos geared toward adults than videos produced for children. She loved the “wow!” moments that she and her child shared through watching videos about natural marvels, science experiments, and art. But those videos were scattered far and wide across the internet, making them a challenge to find. So she and her two children (now 3 & 6) have gather and curated them in one beautifully-designed place. Sasha and I have been regularly turning to The Kid Should See This on snow days. Of course, once we find a video she likes (like this one), she wants to watch it over and over again, so I am thankful to Rion for her good taste!

One of the biggest struggles people email me about here at the Longest Shortest Time is how to make friends as a new mom. Maybe your old friends aren’t moms and don’t get it, or maybe they live too far away to visit. My friend Julia Deak found her answer to that question through Tupperware. When Julia’s son was born, she had just earned her PhD, and had moved cross-country to a new city. And even though she was doing some mommy-baby activities, she was feeling pretty isolated. Things changed when she became a Tupperware consultant, which she found to be a great way to meet friends, cook (one of her favorite activities), and fundraise for local schools and organizations that are important to her. Plus, it brought in enough income to cover the cost of babysitters. Julia is back to teaching now, but she still sells Tupperware; if you’re in the market for storage or cooking gear, you can buy from her directly.
