The Longest Shortest Time

The Idea of an Idea

I just finished reading Naomi Wolf’s Misconceptions, which I talked about here. So much of that book is spot on, but one line in particular has been lingering with me. As Wolf begins to think about getting back to work during that first year of motherhood, she writes, “With my mind wholly preoccupied with keeping up with the work of baby care, the idea of an idea seemed like an impossible luxury.”

Some moms out there, like Liesl of episode #3, seem to be pushed into creativity by motherhood. Others of us have total brain blocks. I think I’ve found that I’m more often on the brain blockage side of things, though I do have sparks here and there. Or maybe it’s that I find spurts of creativity in things having to do with motherhood. This project, for instance.

What have you moms out there found? Anyone find themselves having *ideas* outside the realm of motherhood? Or bursts of creative mommy energy? Or none at all? For those of you past the early days, when did your ideas start coming back? Or is your brain never quite the same?
